In order to display 4K at 60Hz via HDMI the GPU needs to support the V2.0 specification which was introduced in 2013 so it's highly unlikely that your GPU's conform to the HDMI V2.0 specification. I think the GTX 580 was released sometime in 2010 which would mean that it most likely supports the HDMI V1.4 specification which was introduced in 2009 and only supports 4K 30Hz. Specifically I suspect the limitation is with the HDMI specification supported by the GTX 580. Unfortunately I suspect that 4K 30Hz will be limit given the age of the GTX 580. if so it might explain why yo are able to run at 3840 x 2160. However you said you have two GTX 580's in the system so i assume you are running them in SLI ?. To be honest with you i'm amazed you are able to do even that with a GTX 580 as its way above the maximum supported resolution according to the specs on the Nvidia Web site. Non Retina (This is my actual display settings for the monitor in question The Display menu is confusing in my opinion because it displays different scaling options for retina & non retina displays: The side monitors on windows look blurry, when compared to the main and I paid alot of money for my new monitor and I'm very happy with it, so I want to run it at full whack. If I set the display to 1080p the strain goes but the quality of the image is worse than my side monitors. I've been getting eye strain this week when my main monitor is set to 1440p, its really bad. On Mac I'm having a few more problems getting this display scaling to work properly. All you need to do is whack 1 slider up to set an appropriate display scale and you're done. I bought a new 1440p 165Hz beast of a gaming monitor, I've been using it on windows since November with absolutely no issues. I'm back in the home office but the setup has changed since I last used it (which worked perfectly). I use a Dell D6000 Dock to connect my 2018 MacBook Pro (and when WFH in lockdowns my work Mac Mini). This setup until November was 3 1080p 27" monitors.
